Ep. 21 - Early Roots
As 2023 drew to a close, we reflect not only the year in passing, but went back further to the profound sounds of our adolescence — 90s hip hop. The latter half of its golden age not only defined our formative years from a musical standpoint, but also planted the seeds for our sociological imagination touching on larger issues of race, the struggles of the underclass in America, and nods of spiritual consciousness. A dissertation could be written about the introspective qualities and creative genius from the precocious talent of this era, sonically and lyrically, so we were due for an episode filled with sentimentally charged joints that started us on this jazz journey. The episode is a tale of two coast, hour one are mustafa’s selections mostly from NYC, but strictly east coast, and in hour two my realm is all stuff from the left coast underground. — Earl B.
